If any of you have been following the battle between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD over the past two years, this would have to be one of the most important pieces of news at this stage in the game.Warner released a press statement today announcing their decision to drop HD-DVD as a format. They will be releasing movies on DVD and Blu-Ray starting May 2008. ( Warner's Announcement (http://www.timewarner.com/corp/newsroom/pr/0,20812,1700383,00.html) ).With this move, the only studios that remain in the HD-DVD exclusive camp are Universal, Paramount and Dreamworks. Major studios that are now supporting Blu-Ray exclusively are Disney (Buena Vista), 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Brothers, MGM and Lionsgate representing almost 70% of the Home Entertainment business. The move comes just days before CES 2008 in Las Vegas. The timing is important because now all the Blu-Ray stakeholders can back their displays with some real figures and momentum at CES. Also, by clarifying their position on the Formats, Warner has definitely helped consumers that have been straddling the fence to make a choice.This is going to be a good year for Hi-Def. Of course, you have to truly understand what the Die Hard franchise stands for to truly appreciate the movie. Well, it's a guy thing.I saw the first Die Hard when I was about 11 years old and I ran around the house with a toy pistol ridding the place of all them terrorists. I couldn't jump off the roof like McClaine, but this review is not about me. Point being, I am biased. And this one I saw in the screening theater at the Fox Studio lot. One of the best places to enjoy a movie... factory fresh In this episode of the series, terrorists have taken control of America through a perfectly planned coordinated attack on every major government network in the country. And McClaine is caught in the middle of it through his knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.The rest goes down in typical Die hard fashion. The movie grabs your attention right from the start and does not let go till the credits roll. Cars flying into helicopters, high speed chases, F-35 raptors, SUVs hurtling down elevator shafts, megaton explosions and heavy weaponry. Everything that makes for a great action movie is thrown into it and then some.McClain has aged since 'Die hard with a Vengeance' that was 12 years ago. But the movie definitely makes that transition for him graceful. He's still the wise-cracking-not-giving-a-sh!t badass that he has always been. Albeit, annoyed with all this new technology and the fact that his captain can always follow him with a new-fangled lo-jack.I have been waiting for this movie for 12 years, and it did not dissappoint. This is what an action movie means to me. Okay, so a lot of the sequences are pretty over the edge and you have to suspend your disbelief a number of times. But then, this is what you watch an action movie for. And I did not have very high expectations going in. One, it was a movie with Penguins. Of late, there've been so many. But, I was wrong.This was not a Penguin-centric movie at all. It was all about Surfing. The protagonists happened to be penguins, that's all. Cody Maverick, born in Shiverpool, Antarctica, is a natural born surfer and is generally considered a bum by everybody on the island. Then, he gatecrashes his way into the biggest surfing contest on Earth and sets out to beat the reigning champion, the big mean Tank Evans. Full of some excellent characters and a whole new way of presentation, this one is recommended.The whole movie is presented as a documentary. A bunch of people making a surfing documentary with Cody Maverick as one of the central characters. And it really works well for the movie. The Animation is top-notch. The waves, the old grainy documentaries and the general ambience is done extremely well.
